1️⃣ Understanding the NHS Landscape

Firstly, it's important to understand that the NHS is not a monolithic entity. Depending on whether you are in a community/primary care setting (like a GP practice) or a secondary/tertiary setting (like a hospital), the protocols, policies, and working methods can vary significantly.

2️⃣ Transition Challenges

Many IMGs report finding the transition into the NHS both difficult and stressful. On average, it takes at least 2-3 months of working in the system before feeling comfortable with the various protocols and practices, as well as the communication style of patients and colleagues. BiteCourses has been established to support IMGs with this transition, offering valuable resources and guidance from experienced doctors working in the NHS.

3️⃣ The Application Process

• Preparation: Ensure that your CV, qualifications, and certificates are well-documented and in a digital, shareable format before you start applying.

• Job Platforms: Sign up for free accounts on NHS Jobs, Trac, BMA Jobs, Indeed, and LinkedIn. Keep alerts on and check regularly.

• Job Ads Scrutiny: Carefully read job advertisements and apply only if you meet the mandatory requirements. For instance, do not apply for roles that require MRCP if you don't have it.

• Interview Preparation: Practice answering questions with a colleague or friend to build confidence.

• Research and Understanding: Understand the employer – whether it's a hospital Foundation Trust or another type of organisation. Familiarize yourself with the specific NHS values mentioned in the job advertisement and reference these in your application and interview.
